William Shakespeare's tragedy is a classic on German and international stages. But what would a translation of this work into contemporary Uganda look like? Uganda, formerly colonized by England, is today one of most struggling countries in the world. How does a play from the colonial culture in post-colonial Uganda work? What if it were to replace the conflict of houses with today's smoldering conflict between local tribes? May a young woman in Uganda choose her husband freely? What value does a human life have in a society in which many people have to fight for survival every day ?
Director Simon Eifeler (Germany), together with author, poet and actor Peter Kagayi (Uganda), want to address this and other hot topics in their joint production. With support from bridgeworks and together with the Ugandan participants of the bridgeworks art camp 2018, they want to bring the production to the stage of the National Theater in Kampala in 2019.
